Betty Jo Grajeda
I do not know the difference between a camshaft and a
drive shaft but I know how to make them go. One of my favorite things is
floating over the sand at the dunes. Initially my vehicle of choice was a
large 4-wheel drive vehicle, which I thought could be used to jump over the
dunes, after it spent much time in the repair shop I changed rides. I have
discovered the Honda Pilot is the machine for me. The durability of the
Pilot allows me to swiftly navigate the dunes. I have come to know the
repair shops in the area well but am usually able to get back on the sand with
minimal delay.
I remember my first visit to Glamis was filled with
amazement. I wondered who owned the land. One day I happened upon an
accident and with that I discovered the BLM Park Rangers and Emergency Medical
Technicians. It appeared that my medical background was helpful in this
environment. I was told about the Imperial Sand Dunes Patrol (volunteers
who come out to recreate but also dedicate time assisting the rangers and
helping visitors).
I became a volunteer. I have seen people who leave
a campsite cleaner than they found it and I have seen people who think nothing
of throwing glass bottles in the sand. In an effort to increase respect
for our land and to educate our youth I helped coordinate the Imperial Sand
Dunes Junior Ranger Program. The first class was taught Thanksgiving 1998.
I hope to recruit more volunteers so that others can share in this experience.
I camp in the Glamis area and usually spend time at
Cahuilla Ranger Station. I live in Chandler Arizona, where a four-hour drive
gets you to the sand. When you see me at the dunes or the repair shop, know that
I want to maintain our riding opportunity. I along with the other TRT
members struggle with decisions that we hope will benefit the dunes and us.
