The OHMVR Commission

Why do we care about the OHMVR Commission?

The reason is simple: about 2/3's of the money the BLM uses to operate the ISDRA is given to them by the OHMVR Commission. WITHOUT THIS MONEY, THE BLM WOULD BE FORCED TO CLOSE THE DUNES TO PUBLIC ACCESS.

We know it seems odd that a state commission gives money that was generated in the state to the federal government, but we need this money to be put into the ISDRA. Once a year the staff at the BLM El Centro Office completes a lengthy process to request a grant from the commission. The off road community is in favor of this arrangement.

Where does this money come from? It is generated by our green sticker fees in part but mostly from the gas tax that we pay at the pump. Years ago, it was computed how many OHVs there were in the state and the annual average gallons that go into them. The road tax on those gallons is given to the OHMVR to enhance off roading in the state. This is a good reason to make sure your OHV is registered - the more OHVs, the more gas tax given to the OHMVR.

The Commission provides policy for OHMVR and authorizes expenditures, including grants. The Commission wants to listen to the views of the OHV Community about what is happening out there in the riding areas. The commissioners welcome your thoughts on ways to improve OHV recreation, where grant money should be spent, or problems you see, along with suggestions for solving them. If you cannot attend a local meeting, please submit your written comments to:
